Catch Me Up: Mobile AI Newsletter Personalizing Sports News

Problem
Sports fans often struggle to keep up with news about their favorite teams, lacking time to sift through updates. To stay competitive, Yahoo Sports aimed to solve this pain point. We hypothesized that addressing this need would boost user engagement and drive growth, with 10M+ monthly active users as our starting base.
Challenge
As the lead designer, I spearheaded a 0-to-1 initiative called Catch Me Up (CMU). CMU focused on creating an AI-powered newsletter to keep sports fans informed about their favorite teams. I also expanded the design system to include a game-specific experience, enabling fans to follow updates across pre-game, live game, and post-game stages, supported by tools for our editorial team.
Solution
I collaborated with stakeholders on setting the strategy for:
1. An AI-driven in-app newsletter for MLB fans on iOS and Android.
2. A CMU experience for NFL fans with game summaries, player stats, comparisons, video highlights, and social media content.
Impact
The CMU AI newsletter launched in July 2024, surpassing targets with a 7% DAU CTR (against a 3% goal) and a 21% completion rate (doubling the 10% target), demonstrating strong engagement with sports fans.
